Installing JE Pistons

JE Pistons

In order to install your new JE Pistons, you need to do several steps before you get to the actual installation. Since they are an essential engine component, you must remove the engine in your vehicle first for ease of installation. Removing the engine in your car is a challenging task that requires some specific tools, but it can still be a DIY job.

Before you get started on replacing your stock parts with JE enthusiast pistons, you must get the proper tools. Most importantly, you need an engine hoist which will allow you to remove the engine safely. You also need a set of wrenches in various sizes in order to remove all of the bolts from the various components that are under your car's hood. You also need a bucket in order to drain the radiator fluid out of the vehicle. A jack and jack stands are required as well since you will need to raise the car up. Gloves are also something that you should use to protect your hands.

The first step to removing your engine is removing your car's hood. The hood of the car is heavy and can get in the way so it's best to just remove it. Once the hood is removed and put into a safe place, you can get to the process of removing the engine itself so you can install your new pistons. You should then remove your battery and then drain the fluid out of the radiator before continuing with the uninstallation of the engine. Once the radiator is drained you can remove the fan and other components around it and then remove the radiator.

Once the radiator is removed, you can loosen the power steering pump and air conditioning compressor while leaving the hoses connected. You should then loosen the exhaust manifold and remove the bolts where the motor is hooked up to the transmission. Once that has been done, you can then raise the car up and set it on the jack stands. Once the car is lifted up you can slide underneath it in order to disconnect the other components such as the transmission and the motor mounts. Once they have been disconnected you can then lower the vehicle back down and tie a chain around the engine to secure it. Once that is done, you are one step closer to installing your JE pistons.

Once the engine is ready to be removed and the chain around the engine is in place, you may then bring around the engine hoist. Hook the chain up to the hoist and slowly remove the engine making sure to not damage anything when you pull it out. Once the engine is out of the vehicle and secured on the hoist, you may put it down on a flat surface such as a table that can handle the weight of the engine so you can then proceed to the removal of the stock pistons and then the installation of your new JE automotive pistons.

Before removing the stock pistons, you should clean off the engine with a degreaser and then make sure everything is drained out of it. After cleaning up the engine, you can remove the cylinder heads and other components surrounding it so you can get to the pistons. Remove the bolts surrounding the pistons and then remove the pistons. Once the stock pistons are removed, you can install your new forged pistons from JE.

Installing your JE Pistons is fairly easy once everything is removed. Make sure they were prepared properly set up with the JE Pro Seal piston rings and were lubricated properly beforehand. Then you should lubricate the cylinder walls in the engine block to make the installation of the new pistons easier. Then compress your automotive pistons and install them into the correct cylinders. The cylinders will be marked and you need to install the pistons in the correct order for the engine to work properly. Be very careful during this process since pistons are an important engine component and you do not want to damage them or the block itself. The engine is the most important part of the vehicle after all. Once the pistons are installed you should reinstall the other hardware that holds everything together in the engine before covering it back up.

Once you install your new JE Pistons and properly seat them, you can reinstall the cylinder cover and reinstall the external components of the motor and prepare it to be placed back into the vehicle. Once all of the external parts such as the oil pan have been bolted back into place, you may then get the engine back onto the hoist and then reinstall it into your vehicle. Be careful when hoisting it and then lowering it back into the vehicle. Be sure not to hit the car with the engine and be sure that everything fits properly before removing it from the hoist. Also make sure that the engine mounts are in place before releasing it from the hoist. Once you have double checked everything, you can then unhook it from the engine hoist. Then you can proceed to reinstall all of the other components that you disconnected when you removed the engine. Just be careful and redo everything in reverse order in order to properly reinstall your engine.

Once your engine and all of the supporting components in the engine bay are properly reinstalled and refilled with their proper fluids, you can take a step back and admire your work. You successfully installed a set of JE Pistons to your vehicle and now you can then decide what your next goals in terms of tuning it for more power or turning your vehicle into a full-fledged race car. These high performance pistons are an excellent first step in extracting more power out of your engine and allowing it to be as durable as before while also putting out significantly more horsepower and torque.

All in all, this process should take about a day or so depending on how quickly you work and if you have all of the parts on hand. Installing forged pistons is not a particularly simple job to do, but it is doable by yourself if you have some mechanical knowledge and the proper tools. If you do not feel comfortable doing this or if you do not have the tools, you can still have your new pistons installed by a shop. That is a valid alternative, but in the end you will still have high quality JE Pistons installed in your vehicle.
